Milk Doesn't Get Much Fresher Than This
Award winning cheeses, along with milk, butter, ice-cream, yoghurt, fudge, and salad dressing are some of the products on sale at Woefuldane Organic Dairy shop in the Cotswolds. They are all produced by hand at Woefuldane farm, less than half a mile along the road.
A family business, the shop and cafe in the centre of Minchinhampton are run by Henry Ravenhill and his wife Suzy. Henry's sister Olivia and father Jonathan manage their herd of 50 dairy shorthorn cows in nearby fields.
From Cow to Customer
Keeping working methods traditional in their 110-acre dairy is an important part of Woefuldane. The cattle graze in the outdoors every day, and are even kept together in family groups which have their own 'surnames', like 'The Speckys' and 'The Bobs'.
"All the dairy produce on sale in the shop is produced on our farm," explained Henry. "We're organic and keep everything as natural as possible, selling locally as much as possible. If you buy something from our shop you know it's at its very freshest."
In their virtual tour below you can see the milk cans in the fridge where customers can 'bring a bottle' and have it filled to take home, just as it would have been sold many years ago.
As Henry says on their Twitter account, the milk travels just 'one mile from cow to customer'.
Blue Heaven
Cheese is a popular seller, with Woefuldane hand-making this for almost 20 years. They've expanded their range in recent years, now offering 10 different varieties with deliciously descriptive names like Tinglestone and Blue Heaven.
Another new addition to the choice of products is dairy fudge, crammed with flavour from the organic butter and cream which goes into it. Although still in the early stages of development, Woefuldane Fudge recently won a First Prize in the Three Counties Cheese & Dairy Show in Malvern.
Best Local Food
After the shop was first opened by his parents six years ago, Henry has managed the business since then, with he and Suzy adding the cafe on the side at the end of 2013. Here you can relax and enjoy a mouth watering display of home-made cakes and biscuits, perhaps with a spoonful of clotted cream on the side.
Their position as a winning business was confirmed last year, with Woefuldance being named Best Local Food Producer in the Taste of Gloucestershire Food & Farming Awards 2014.
