Picture House Tattoo Studio

Award winning body artMarilyn Monroe

With the trend for tattoos ever growing (how many people do you know these days who don’t have one?), we thought it was time we featured one of the many studios we’ve produced Business View tours for recently.

Picture House Tattoo Studio is a new venture, opening in October 2013 in the Wiltshire market town of Chippenham. Housed over two floors of a building more than 200 years old, it’s decorated throughout in a plush vintage cinema theme. This is a business offering the very latest in custom-drawn tattoos.

House of pictures

The movie house theme was the idea of studio owner, Chantale Coady. “I’ve always loved films and the Picture House era,” she explained. “A tattoo studio is, after all, a house full of pictures. We have real red velvet cinema chairs in the waiting area, and customers can watch films on our flat screen TV while they’re having their tattoos inked.”

There’s a life-size model of Marilyn Monroe at the reception desk, a popcorn maker, luxurious chandelier-style lighting, and classic movie posters all around the walls.

Comfort for customers is most definitely a priority. With tattoos taking some time to complete, there’s even a foot warmer provided for those whose feet get a bit chilly when they’re sitting still.

Across Europe
Movie PostersThe history of the building can be seen throughout, particularly upstairs with the old wooden floors and ceiling beams. Here you can also view the most recent of their regular art exhibitions, featuring pictures by a local surrealist artist inspired by the theme of the Femme Fatale.

As well as the beautiful building, Chippenham was also a popular choice of location for the business due to its good road and rail links. Clients will travel long distances to find a good tattoo studio, and many customers of Picture House come from across Europe.

Talented artists

There are four permanent tattooists working in the business, all of whom have studied fine art, and who include some of the most talented in the country. Chantale has been nominated for best UK female tattooist for the last two years running by the UK Tattoo Industry Awards. Both Chantale and another staff member, Claire Hamill, have won awards at numerous tattoo events, including Best Small Colour, Best Large Colour, Best Portrait, Best of Convention, amongst many others.

The artists specialise in different genres; Chantale’s passion is for portraits and renaissance art, Claire’s for intricate, black and grey pattern work, Joe’s interest is in traditional/neo-traditional, and Steph’s speciality is drawing animals. Part-time artist, Alex, excels at Japanese and abstract art.

As you’ll spot from the tour, there are no pre-prepared drawings on the walls to choose from. All tattoos are created from scratch, being designed especially for each individual customer. Chantale has completed thousands of tattoos over the last five years she’s been in the business. One of the largest she has worked on covered the whole of a customer’s back and took two full days to complete.

“We’re all very proud of Picture House Studio,” said Chantale. “We’ve worked hard to make sure the environment is clean, comfortable, friendly and fun. Customers can visit knowing they’ll feel completely relaxed while we concentrate on producing their fabulous body art.”
