A Taste of the Caribbean in Chepstow
Colourful wooden walls and a long staircase leads you from the street in Chepstow up to The Rum Bar & Kitchen. This lively new Caribbean-themed venue, just off the centre of the Welsh market town, serves refreshing holiday-inspired cocktails and food every day of the week.
The tropical influence continues as you take the steps, with pineapple and flower decorated posters and warm orange paint. Further up, a huge full-length wall painting of a Caribbean woman leaves you in no doubt you're at the right place. A couple of welcoming chairs await at the gallery at the top, where you can rest your legs while you take in the sunny beach shack ambience.
A huge blackboard ensures you can't miss what's planned for the week; from the 'Monday Madness 50% off' deal, Wednesday's 'Tapas n Tings' to Saturday's 'DJ on the Decks', before you turn the corner into the heart of the venue.
A large, light space, the room is dominated by the impressive Caribbean bar. Made up of what looks like wooden crates and a striking corrugated iron base, this is upcycling at its most inventive. It's a fabulous structure; the gleaming drinks surface and huge electric lit 'Rum' sign making it an eye-catching mix of both old and new materials.
Colourful wooden furniture surrounds the room, with the further clever use of recycling producing tables out of scaffolding planks. For those who might want to spread out and relax, a raised platform of inviting squashy sofas runs almost the length of the room, looking out through the deep windows onto the street below.
Colourful & Contemporary
On the far side of the bar is a seated dining area; its multi-coloured chairs matched by the myriad of cheerful Caribbean hues painted on the wooden wall behind. A window through to the kitchen shows the colourful theme continuing, with its sea blue glossy tiles and even chopping boards in matching red, green and blue.
At the end of the room, another couple of steps take you into the Rum Lounge. With its exposed walls and sleek furniture, this has a modern urban loft feel; the long stretch of curved seating offering a comfortable intimacy for larger groups.
And when the weather's kind, we mustn't forget the stunning roof terrace. This contemporary space, decorated with vibrant cushions and parasols, bamboo greenery and a fabulous beach scene mural, extends the tropical feel outside. It must be a fantastic place to be on a warm summer's night.
Serving a tempting selection of drinks and cocktails, accompanied by steaks, burgers, and delicious Caribbean-themed dishes, you don't have to travel far to enjoy a taste of the tropics in Wales.
