Drinking Up the History at The Old Swan Inn

You can feel the history seeping from the magnificent stone walls in this week's favourite virtual tour. Standing amongst a row of shops within the pretty Cotswold town of Lechlade, the 16th century Old Swan Inn is the oldest pub in town.

A glorious place of timber beams and flooring, cosy corners and huge open fires, the building is also home to an amazing collection of quirky antiques and curios which decorate every wall, window sill and ceiling.

With a bar, restaurant and fabulous bedroom accommodation, it's a welcoming destination in which to enjoy some locally brewed beer, great food, and perhaps a night or two away from home.

Timber & Stone

Step inside The Old Swan and there's plenty of comfortable seating for drinkers and diners alike, enclosed by a plethora of unusual objects to make you smile.

Pub and tobacco signs, beer barrels, clocks, petrol cans, wooden wheels, a clothes mangle like our mums used to have, and even a classic Yamaha 'fizzy' bike are just a few of the treasures which draw the eye. The ceiling of the bar is decorated with old tobacco tins and, if you look skywards in The Snug at the back, there's even an upside down canoe, hopefully pretty well secured above your head.

Musical Chairs

The dining area has more of a musical theme, with a saxophone, violin and trumpets adorning the walls, along with antique gramophone players and radios. Next to the large bay window at the front of the room, huge leather sofas nestled around the fireplace offer an inviting space in which to cosy up.

The welcoming ambience continues upstairs with the bedroom accommodation. Beautifully decorated rooms have open fireplaces, classic chairs, soft lighting and delicately carved four poster beds set amongst a backdrop of some stunning stone walls.

Soak up the Atmosphere

With so much to see and such fascinating surroundings, The Old Swan Inn is certainly a place in which to stop.

Call in for just a quick drink, if you will, but we recommend you eat, drink and stay a while to soak up the history and atmosphere of this charismatic English pub.
